LANSING — State lawmakers are debating how Michigan should recognize the farmworkers’ rights movement.

State Rep. Veronica Paiz introduced substitute language to House Bill 5836 that would replace Cesar Chavez Day in state law with Farmworkers Day.

Paiz said the change would honor workers, families and advocates rather than one individual.

The proposal comes after recent reporting by The New York Times raised allegations about Chavez’s conduct, prompting renewed debate over public honors tied to his legacy.

The substitute was not adopted on the House floor, but Paiz said she plans to continue pursuing the effort through the state Senate.
