Ida, MI – A 24-year-old Deerfield man was involved in a motor vehicle vs. bicyclist serious injury traffic crash in Monroe County early this morning.

Monroe County Sheriff Troy Goodnough is reporting that the crash occurred on Ida West Road, west of Riggs Street, in Ida Township.

The crash was reported on Thursday at 6:38 a.m. Preliminary investigation reveals that a 58-year-old Dundee resident was operating a silver 21 inch Mongoose Domain bicycle, eastbound on Ida West Road, in the middle of the eastbound lane of travel. While in motion, he was struck by a white 2017 Chevrolet Impala operated by a 24-year-old Deerfield man.

At the time of the crash, the Deerfield man drove left of center to pass the bicyclist, and while doing so, the bicyclist veered toward the center of the roadway, sideswiping the vehicle. The Dundee man then fell from his bicycle, coming to rest in the eastbound ditch of Ida West Road.

The Deerfield man’s vehicle came to rest on the east side shoulder of the roadway. The bicyclist was transported to ProMedica Toledo Hospital for injuries suffered in the crash, where he is listed in critical condition. He was not wearing a helmet. The Deerfield man was wearing his safety belt and was not injured. Airbags in the 2017 Chevrolet Impala did not deploy.

Speed and alcohol are not factors in the crash. Members of Monroe Community Ambulance and the Ida Township Fire Department assisted at the scene. The crash remains under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call 734-240-7557.
