Onsted, MI – The Cambridge Township Planning Commission has set a Public Hearing to discuss draft ordinance changes about mining and extraction.
The township is currently under a 6-month moratorium…which has been in place since the end of December 2022. The moratorium does not allow mining and extraction to take place in the township.
This was enacted to give Cambridge Township time to look at updating their ordinances, which the township attorney has said are outdated. A land-owner near Killarney Highway and US-12 has submitted an application to mine on their property.
The operation would take around 10 years, then the pit would be turned into a lake, with the intention of homes to be built around it. Local residents have been vocal about their opposition to the project.
Cambridge Township Planning Commission Chairperson, Tom Kissel, presented the public and commission with the first draft ordinance changes at their regular meeting Wednesday night. He talked to WLEN News about the current timeline for the possible ordinance changes…
Kissel set the public hearing for April 26th at 7pm.
