Adrian, MI – An abolitionist with ties to Lenawee County will be the topic of discussion at an upcoming Adrian Noon Rotary Club program.

Descendants of Laura Smith Haviland will be guests at the April 20th program to talk about their relative’s legacy…and to receive the Paul Harris Fellowship Award for her work and contribution to end slavery, and the good she stood for during a perilous time in our country’s history.

Laura and her family moved from New York in 1829 to Lenawee County in the then-Michigan Territory.

She opened the first integrated school in Michigan in 1837, called the Raisin Institute. She was very involved with the Underground Railroad during the 1830s and her home became the first Underground Railroad station in Michigan.

Tune into our local and state newscasts, anytime day or night, for this story and more.
