Lansing, MI – State Representative Bronna Kahle, chair of the House Health Policy Committee, welcomed local community leaders from Lenawee County to a committee meeting to deliver a presentation on workforce shortages in health care.
The chairwoman hosted the presentations to help educate the committee about the dangerously low staffing levels within Michigan health care systems and learn from industry experts about the necessary steps that must be taken to keep quality workers from leaving the industry and acquire new workers to staff hospitals and other health care facilities.
Dr. Julie Yaroch, president of ProMedica Charles and Virginia Hickman Hospital, gave an overview of the staffing crisis and the resulting ramifications.
Kathryn Szewczuk, executive director of Lenawee Community Mental Health Authority, also delivered a presentation – providing perspective on the impact the workforce shortage has had on the mental and behavioral health care industry.
House Bill 5523 – now Public Act 9 of 2022 – is the budget supplemental that Kahle helped approve earlier this year. It provided $300 million in funding to support the state’s hospital staff through recruitment and retention programs, along with additional support for nursing homes and other long-term care facilities.
