Adrian, MI – Adrian College President Jeffrey Docking will present his annual State of the College Address in person this year at 12:15 p.m., on Friday, April 1, on campus in the Adrian Tobias Center. The title for the event is, “No Victory Without Work — Palma Non Sine Labore.”

“This title not only reflects the ethos of Adrian College, and one of the fundamental building blocks of success that we teach our students,” Docking said, “it also reflects our approach to the COVID-19 pandemic, in which we remained open to on-campus instruction and activities while so many institutions closed for over a year.”

The motto, “No Victory Without Work,” was originally created by the Adrian College class of 1887 and inscribed on a Shepard’s Crook used for graduation ceremonies.

Docking said the State of the College program will recap another historic year on campus, and outline several exciting future initiatives in new majors, minors, campus construction projects, athletic teams, student scholarships, and other opportunities.

Some of the event’s highlights include 2008 Adrian College graduate Desmond Upshaw and current student Maria Cucci who will speak about campus technology upgrades for both alumni and students.

Adrian College’s Director of Institute for Creativity, and Department of Art and Design Chair, Travis Erxleben, and student Ben Seigman, will discuss the new art gallery currently being constructed on campus.

Faculty President Tony Coumoundouros and graduate student Julia Dolce will discuss exciting changes in graduate programming and new MBA tracks.

Additional topics include: Enhancements to Adrian College Boulevard, residence hall renovations, cutting-edge technology additions to classrooms, and the new hotel – Comfort Inn Suites – that recently opened across the street from the College’s new grand entrance.

Also, during the presentation, Docking and Erxleben will announce the 2022 Creativity Award winner, a contest to identify the best new innovative idea submitted by students and staff to create a better campus.

“It will feel good to see faces and smiles at the event,” Docking said. “It took a lot of hard work to successfully get through the last two years with all of the regulations and restrictions imposed on us, but our Covid-19 preparedness team did an excellent job of getting us through that unprecedented period so we could offer students a relatively normal college experience, with all the memories, friendships, and learning opportunities that go with it.”
