Adrian, MI – The Adrian City Commission took the next step in allowing the raising of chickens in the city limits at their meeting Tuesday night.

The group was given a revised ordinance from the Planning Commission, and they officially had a first reading and introduction. As per procedure, there will be a second reading and a vote on it at their next meeting, February 1st.

In addition to the second reading and vote, there will be a final chance for public input on the proposed ordinance at a public hearing that is scheduled on Feb. 1st, before the vote.

Here are a few basics of the proposed ordinance:

  • you must own the property that you are keeping chickens on
  • the lot must be at least 10,000 square feet
  • chickens would be kept in a coop
  • coops must be at least 10 feet from adjacent property lines
  • coops must be no closer that 40 feet to any residential property on adjacent properties
