Adrian, MI – The Michigan Department of Transportation reminds motorists to watch out for pedestrians, joggers, and bicyclists each evening on the drive home because of the recent time change.

Research from the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute confirms that pedestrians are more at risk of serious injury from a motor vehicle crash in the weeks following a return to standard time. The most dangerous time is the first hour of darkness.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, traffic crashes in 2018 resulted in the deaths of 6,283 pedestrians. Most pedestrian fatalities occurred during dark conditions between 6 p.m. and 8:59 p.m.
