A wealthy Broadway producer, a nervous playwright, a pill-popping leading lady and other memorable characters combine for a hilarious evening of entertainment in “It’s Only a Play,” a comedy that opens Feb. 21 at the Croswell Opera House in Adrian.
The show takes place in the bedroom of a New York City townhouse as the producer and her friends anxiously await the reviews of their new play, titled “The Golden Egg.” Pop-culture gags come fast and furious as the evening progresses, and the result is an occasionally savage parody of the foibles of the theater world.
Karen Miller of Adrian plays Julia Budder, the producer, with John Bacarella of Monroe as playwright Peter Austin and Nate Adams of Adrian as the egomaniacal young director Frank Finger.
Stephen Kiersey of Brownstown Township plays Ira Drew, a ruthless theater critic; Cindy Bilby of Toledo is Virginia Noyes, the leading lady; Peter Stewart of Adrian is James Wicker, a television actor and the playwright’s best friend; and Jordan Hayes of Adrian is Gus P. Head, coatcheck boy and aspiring actor.
The director is Doug Miller, who previously directed the Croswell’s productions of “Once” and “Next to Normal.”
“It’s Only a Play” runs for two weekends, Feb. 21-23 and Feb. 28 to March 1, with Friday and Saturday performances at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday performances at 2:30 p.m. Tickets range from $20 to $25, with a $15 discounted rate for students.
The play includes some adult language and humor.
The Croswell is at 129 E. Maumee St., Adrian. For tickets and more information, call 517-264-7469 or go to croswell.org.
