Adrian Commission Approves Second Season of Downtown Ice Rink

The Adrian City Commission approved the installation of a downtown ice rink for this winter. This will be the second year of the outdoor rink that will once again be located in the parking lot near the corner of Winter and Maumee Streets.

Some downtown business and building owners showed strong objection to it, citing lost revenue due to the lack of space to park near their business. They also said that water leaked through the liner, froze, and caused a slipping hazard. Some also said that there was often trash around the rink.

People that supported the ice rink said that even if the rink was not wildly successful in its first year, that is no reason to ax the project. The Commission also invested nearly $10,000 in the project last year.

Michael Neal, who spoke on behalf of the group facilitating activities at…and building… the rink, was in attendance at multiple pre meeting study sessions to answer questions from the Commissioners. The main question was about location. Neal said that other locations downtown either did not fit the mission of the group or the parking lot had too much slope.

Commissioners Allen Heldt, Lad Strayer, Brad Watson, and Mayor Chuck Jacobson voted “yes”, while Commissioners Kirk Valentine and Mary Roberts voted “no”.
