MORENCI, MI – On June 9, 2019 the Morenci Police Department responded to a call of vandalism at Wakefield Park that occurred the evening of June 8, 2019 or the early morning of June 9, 2019. A severe amount of damage was found at Wakefield Park. Vandals broke windows in the men’s and women’s restroom, removed and smashed stall doors in the men’s and women’s restroom to a point of no repair, tee-peed trees, pushed over port-a-johns, damaged bleachers on all fields, and damaged an electrical panel and roofs of the dug-outs. There was also minor damage to Stephenson Park.

The City of Morenci hopes to have restrooms back together for Little League games and the Morenci Town & Country Festival, however, the availability of items for the restrooms at Wakefield Park will take time to get in due to the extent of damage to the restrooms. Restrooms will be able to be used, but will be without doors to the stalls and mirrors above the bathroom sinks until those items are able to be ordered, delivered, and installed.

Individuals with any information regarding the vandalism are urged to contact the Morenci Police Department at (517) 458 – 7104. A few local businesses have offered a monetary reward for any information leading to the conviction of suspects related to the vandalism.
