A power outage in and around the city of Adrian early Thursday morning left over 5,000 Consumers Energy customers in the dark for several hours.

Reports from the energy company say that a car struck a utility pole near Treat Street where the train tracks cross the road.

As a result, the pole was snapped and the power lines were hanging lower that they should be. Unfortunately, a train was traveling on the tracks at about the same time, and hit the low-hanging wires. That collision snapped another utility pole, causing more outages.

Both issues resulted in the power substations at Beecher Street and Maumee Street to lose power. Customers hooked into the Maumee Street substation had power restored by 4:18 am Thursday; and Beecher Street substation customers had power back on by around 9:30 am Thursday.
