Carl Stites, age 82, passed away on December 5, 2024, at Hickman Hospital in Adrian, Michigan.
Carl was born on July 14, 1942 in Tecumseh, MI, to Glenn Stites and Mildred (Wellhoff) Stites.
Carl served in the Navy from 1962 to 1971 followed by 2 years in the reserves. Although, he didn’t speak much about Vietnam he loved to share stories and tell us about the different places he was stationed and visited while enlisted.
Carl married Wilma Jo LaLonde on April 21, 1973. Together the couple had one son, Daryl Stites.
Civilian life led him to serve as a correctional officer at the Milan Federal Prison. After retiring in 1994, Carl was able to really start enjoying life with more time designated to fishing, hunting, gardening, and camping.
Later in life Carl became the families volunteer dog trainer and doorman. The art of chasing squirrels and sitting pretty for treats were two of his favorite tricks to teach the dogs.
Carl is survived by his son, Daryl (Shana) Stites; granddaughter Kelsey Stites; and great-grandson, Noah Imthurn. Also, surviving is Wilma’s daughter and family; Teri (Danny) Bowden, Christina Bowden and Benjamin Rodriguez.
Carl is joined in Heaven by his parents, Glenn and Millie; wife, Wilma, many siblings, and step-grandson Benjamin Bowden.
Carl was kind, patient, reliable and hardworking. He believed in the motto of work before play. Carl sure knew how to enjoy play time; by sharing a story, pulling a practical joke or involving some silly shenanigan to get people laughing. While growing older, he learned to embrace the simple things in life, front porch sitting, watching wildlife and enjoyed a good outdoor nap on sunny day. Carl provided many meaningful and happy memories for those that knew and loved him, which will last their lifetimes.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the VFW of Tecumseh, Hall-Slater Post #4187, 427, N. Evans Street, Tecumseh, MI. 49286
Carl’s wishes were supported and cremation has taken place. Military recognition to occur in the spring of 2025.
