Lansing, MI – The House Education Committee has approved Representative Dale Zorn’s bill that would encourage Michigan schools to better accommodate students who frequently change schools because of their parents’ military service.
The bill helps establish the Purple Star Program, a program that certifies schools that support military children enduring frequent relocation.
Certification through this program means that a school is prepared to respond to the unique needs of military-connected students and provides resources and information to assist students and their families with the process of enrolling and attending the school.
There are currently 37 other states that have Purple Star programs, but not Michigan. Zorn’s bill would require the Michigan Department of Education to create guidelines and standards for schools to be certified as Purple Star Program schools.
House Bill 4027 was approved with bipartisan support and moves to be considered by the full House.
