Marie Ann Shortt, age 88 years of Byron Center, formerly of Addison and Devil’s Lake area, passed away on Thursday, June 20, 2024, at Care Cardinal Byron Center in Byron Center. She was born on August 19, 1935, in Mt. Clemens, the daughter of Lois and Margaret (Dubay) Botwinis. Marie graduated from Mt. Clemens High School in 1953. She married Morley Donald Shortt on August 14, 1965, in Mt. Clemens. He preceded her in death on March 21, 1995.

When living at Devils Lake, Marie was a member of the Addison United Congregational Church. She worked as a bookkeeper at Gentner Trucking and was the Secretary-Treasurer of the Addison Fire Department. She dearly loved her family, especially her grandsons whom she adored. Marie enjoyed cleaning, puzzles, crossword books and reading. She got her most enjoyment from attending any activity that her grandsons were involved in.

Surviving Marie is her daughter, Melissa (Timothy) Kent, grandchildren, Brendan Covell and Bryan Covell, a sister Betty Lou Baumgarten and nieces and nephews Doug Elwell, David Elwell, Chris Elwell, Joe Baumgarten, Lisa Baumgarten and Kathy Baumgarten. She was preceded in death by husband, parents, and brothers, Louis and Joe Botwinis and brother-in-law, Fred Baumgarten.

Cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Life will be held on July 13, 2024, at 12:00 P.M. at the Brown-Van Hemert Funeral Home in Addison with her family leading the service. Visitation will be from 10:00 A.M. until the time of service. The family would like you to join them at a luncheon following the service at Boot Jack Tavern.
