Ottawa Lake, MI – The Environmental Protection Agency and Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy continue to issue updates on the diesel spill at the Pilot Gas Station at US-223 and US-23.
As of Monday, the cleanup at the site continues, and they will send out updates twice a week. The EPA is monitoring for any evidence of sheen and or odor at several natural spring locations near the site…and have not found any impacts from the spill. They will continue to monitor them daily.
Primary excavation activities in North Tenmile Creek are complete. Restoration and final grading will be finished by the end of the week.
On-site concrete removal and disassembly of the diesel system are ongoing. Gravel is being removed to reveal the underground piping. The initial round of private drinking water well sampling has been completed. 580 wells have been sampled, to date. Results have been returned for 513 of those samples.
29,327 gallons of diesel have been recovered from the site. They have also recovered over 717,000 gallons of oil-water mixture. There is an online page dedicated to the leak here: https://response.epa.gov/site/site_profile.aspx?site_id=16399
