Adrian, MI – By a 5-4 vote Wednesday afternoon, the Lenawee County Board of Commissioners decided to limit what types of offers may be reviewed for the former Tecumseh Products site. Commissioner David Stimpson, who represents the City of Tecumseh, brought the issue forward to the full board.
Stimpson said that the Commission fielding offers for industrial businesses to purchase the property could hinder other developments around the roughly-50 acre property. The city is also looking at possible future zoning changes to the area in an effort to redevelop the Evans Street Corridor. He made a motion to maintain the property’s current status with no industrial development. Commissioners Dawn Bales, “KZ” Bolton, Terry Collins, and Ralph Tillotson voted in favor of Stimpson’s motion.
Opponents of the idea… Commissioners Dustin Krasny, Kevon Martis, Nancy Jenkins-Arno, and Jim Van Doren…argued that Lenawee County should not limit itself in who it can sell property to. They said that the county should be looking into putting the property back on the tax rolls as soon as possible. Another part of the motion was the not list or market the property for sale.
Lenawee County purchases the blighted property for about $2.1 million back in 2021 with plans of working with a company to built a multi-use sports complex on the site. That idea has been put on the shelf due to opposition of the idea, and lack of available grant dollars.
