Adrian, MI – The Adrian City Commission accepted the resignation of City Attorney John Gillooly and Garan Lucow Miller PC. The group voted 7-0 to accept the resignation. The Commission also voted to appoint Castleberry & Lucas as Interim City Attorney. That vote was 6-0, with Commissioner Kelly Castleberry…Burke Castleberry’s wife…abstaining.
Commissioners cited that the attorney’s work and experience in the community would be an asset for the City of Adrian. Castleberry and Lucas currently represent multiple governing bodies in and around Lenawee County.
Prior to going into private practice with Fred Lucas, Burke Castleberry was Lenawee County’s Prosecuting Attorney.
During discussions amongst Commissioners, nepotism was brought up by Robert ‘Bob’ Behnke. Nepotism is the act of granting an advantage, privilege, or position to relatives or close friends in an occupation or field.
Behnke’s decision to vote for the appointment hinged on the Commission reviewing the performance of the firm at their first meeting in July, 2024…and deciding whether or not to make Castleberry & Lucas the permanent attorney. Specifics behind John Gillooly and Garan Lucow Miller PC’s resignation have not been publicly stated.
