Adrian, MI – Many Adrian residents have expressed their concern on social media in recent days, and others have called local gas distributor Citizens Gas about gas-like odors in their homes.
WLEN News reached out to Citizens and talked to the General Manager Bert Fruchey about the issue. He said that a farmer was doing work Tuesday evening near Parr Highway and Academy Road and accidentally struck a high-pressure gas line which carried natural gas into Adrian.
Fruchey said that there are two lines running side-by-side, Citizens shut them both off as a precaution, then conducted needed repairs on the damaged line.
When the lines were fixed, there was an issue with the machine that injects the odor into the gas line, and too much was added. The additional odor eventually made its way into Adrian homes. Gas odorization is the process of injecting an odorant into a gas stream by an odorizer or odorant injection equipment. The purpose is to make the gas smell so that one can detect it because, in its natural state, natural gas is odorless.
Fruchey says that the odor itself is not a health concern, but customers should still contact Citizens Gas if they have a strong odor in their home or business.
