EDIT: The Hudson Fire Department has issued a correction as to the address of the fire. It was 138 Lafayette Street.
Hudson, MI – A house in the City of Hudson caught fire and partially collapsed early Monday morning. City of Hudson Fire Chief Jerry Tanner said that his department was dispatched to 143 Lafayette Street at 2am to a residential structure fire.
Chief Tanner immediately called for mutual aid from Addison, Clayton, Jefferson Twp. Wright-Waldron, and Morenci Fire Departments.
Hudson Engines 1 and 4 were on scene of the two-story home fully involved in fire. Initial efforts were concentrated on searching for the occupants and attacking the fire with the top mount deck cannon and 2.5” lines. Additional hand lines were laid to attempt entry into the structure.
Chief Tanner said that the two occupants of the home were accounted for safely outside near 2:18 AM. At 2:28 AM the front wall of the House began to push out and all firefighters were pulled back just before it collapsed into the front yard. The fire attack was changed to an exterior attack for the safety of fire fighters.
Tanner said that extinguishment efforts were also hampered by an active natural gas line burning at the scene. The fire was determined to be under control at 6:15 AM and completely extinguished by 7:10 AM. All units were able to clear the scene at 7:45 AM. Hudson Fire Dept. was back in service at 9:34 AM.
There were 6 fire departments and 37 firefighters on the scene fighting the fire, and there were 24,744 gallons of water used to extinguish the fire.
Tanner said that the damage is estimated at approximately $80,000. The building and contents are a complete loss. The Red Cross was called in to assist the residents.
Hudson Fire was also assisted by Hudson Police Department, Hudson DPW, Michigan Gas and Consumers Energy. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
