4 Jackson County Firefighters Treated for Heat Exhaustion While Fighting Large Structure Fire

Jackson, MI – The City of Jackson issued an Emergency Alert Tuesday due to a large structure fire that was bringing possible breathing and health hazards to the area.

The fire happened at a vacant commercial building on West North Street. The City advised area residents to close their windows and to turn off air conditioning if they were concerned about air quality. The fire was contained within a few hours, the fire department checked air quality in the City and did not find any immediate health impacts…and said that air quality will continue to be monitored.

Every fire department in Jackson County responded to the fire. Three City of Jackson firefighters and one Napoleon Township firefighter were treated on the scene for heat exhaustion, according to a statement released by the City.

Michigan State Police were called in to investigate and the Environmental Protection Agency has been advised to monitor any environmental impacts. The cause of the fire was not released as of Tuesday.
