Monroe County, MI – There was a heavy police presence in a wooded area in Whiteford Township on Tuesday…and the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office reported some clarification on what exactly happened.

Deputies responded to a residence on Walnut Drive to interview a 62-year-old male who was identified in a criminal investigation. Just prior to the deputies arriving on scene, the male contacted his family by telephone and made several statements that he was planning to harm himself if confronted by police.

Information was also obtained that the subject may be armed with a weapon and his exact location on the rural property was unknown.

Deputies set up a wide perimeter, and the man was eventually located in a wooded area near his home… but he refused to communicate or otherwise respond to police commands.

After several hours, the man surrendered his weapon and was taken into custody without further incident. The identity of the subject involved is being withheld at this time.
