Comerica Bank in Brooklyn Robbed; Jackson Man in Custody

Brooklyn, MI – A Jackson man was arrested and charged with robbing the Comerica Bank in Brooklyn.

A news release by the Columbia Township Police Department said that on Tuesday, at approximately 2:10 pm, they department was dispatched to the bank located at 11351 Brooklyn Rd. for a robbery. A single suspect entered the bank and displayed a firearm while seeking money. Once the robbery was complete the suspect fled the bank with an undisclosed amount of cash.

Following the reporting of this robbery, the Columbia Lower Elementary School and the Columbia Upper Elementary School both located in the village of Brooklyn were placed into a lock down as the location of the suspect was unknown. Additionally, Columbia School District transportation was instructed to not enter the area until the situation was secured.

Shortly thereafter contact was made with the occupant of a vehicle matching the description of the suspect vehicle on Wampler’s Lake Rd in Columbia Township. Further investigation into this vehicle and the occupant discovered numerous articles of evidence of the crime and furthermore the evidence identified the suspect of this crime as well.

The identified suspect of the investigation, 23-year-old Gabriel B. Schirmacher of Jackson, was placed into custody and lodged at the Jackson County Jail by the Columbia Township Police Department in connection with the robbery. The police report was completed and forwarded to the Jackson County Prosecutor’s office for review of criminal charges.

Following the review, the prosecutor’s office charge Schirmacher with the following:

Count 1: Robbery-Armed punishable by life or any term of years in prison.
Count 2: Bank Robbery punishable by life or any term of years in prison.
Count 3: Weapons- Felony Firearm punishable by 2 years consecutively with any preceding any term of imprisonment imposed for the felony or attempted felony conviction.
Count 4: Controlled Substance-Possession punishable by 4 years and/or $25,000.00.

Schirmacher was arraigned by 12th District Court Judge Robert Gaecke on Wednesday. At the arraignment a not guilty plea was entered, and a bond of $400,000 cash/surety was set. Schirmacher remains in the Jackson County Jail.

Assisting with this investigation was the Michigan State Police, Jackson County Office of the Sheriff, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
