Ohio Man Drowns in Devil’s Lake; Search to Continue Monday

Manitou Beach, MI – Dive teams and other first responders searched Devil’s Lake for about six hours on Sunday, looking for a man who fell off of a recreational tube and never came back to the surface.

The Lenawee County Sheriff’s Office reports that two families from Sylvania, Ohio rented a cottage on the lake for the Memorial Day weekend and were out tubing with their children. A 39-year-old man was getting ready to go tubing with his daughter.

Deputies report that prior to starting, the male and the child fell off the tube and into the water. The child if fine and has no medical issues, but the adult did no resurface.

The children were all wearing life vests and the male victim was not wearing a life vest. Alcohol was not a factor in this incident.

The Addison Fire Department and the Michigan DNR along with the Sheriff’s Office Marine Patrol, were the first on the scene and attempted to rescue the victim almost immediately but were unsuccessful.

The Sheriff’s Office dive team was called to the scene, along with the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office Dive Team.

Efforts to locate the victim were suspended Sunday night, and will resume first thing Monday morning. The Michigan State Police Dive Team has been requested to assist in the search efforts and will be on scene Monday morning.

The Sheriff’s Office Victim Services unit has been on the scene with the family throughout the day.

The Lenawee County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Michigan DNR, Jackson County Dive Team, Addison Fire Department, Somerset Fire Department and the Liberty Twp Fire Department, who brought out their sonar unit.
