Monroe, MI – Monroe County Sheriff Troy Goodnough is alerting the public to a telephone scam, taking advantage of people within the community.

On Wednesday of this week, several citizens contacted the office reporting that they received a phone call from an individual claiming to be a member of law enforcement. The scammer then proceeded to say that they either have warrants for their arrest or have missed jury duty.

The scammers demand payment over the telephone using an online bill payment program.

Consider the following when receiving suspicious telephone calls:

• Take time to stop and think. Scammers typically sound urgent to pressure you.
• Call someone you trust or the police for an opinion about the call.
• Do not send any money, gift cards or wire transfer payments. Government entities do not require or request payment over the telephone.

If anyone has fallen victim to a similar scam and has any additional questions, contact the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.
