
Bedford Twp., MI – A 28-year-old man was arrested and charged in Monroe County with open murder and home invasion after injuries from an alleged altercation between him and his grandparents lead to his grandmother’s death.
Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a call shortly after 2pm on Friday, December 17th, at a residence on Sterns Rd. in regards to an in-progress domestic violence situation. Deputies arrived at the residence and were alerted that the 28-year-old male suspect fled the home. They located the suspect and took him into custody without incident.
Preliminary information revealed that the suspect arrived at his grandparents’ residence and an argument ensued after he was told to leave. The MCSO reports that the suspect then tried forcing entry back into the residence, at which time his grandfather attempted to stop him. A release by the department said that the suspect then violently assaulted his grandfather. The release went on to say that when the suspect’s grandmother tried to intervene, the suspect violently assaulted her.
28-year-old Jeffrey Travis Ott was arrested and lodged at the Monroe County Jail on domestic violence related charges. Both grandparents were transported the ProMedica Toledo Hospital as a result of their injuries. Ott’s 71-year-old grandfather was treated and released. His 72-year-old grandmother died as a result of complications from her injuries a few days later.
The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office Detective Bureau was notified of the grandmother’s death and a homicide investigation was initiated. After a thorough investigation, detectives presented the Monroe County Prosecutor’s Office with newly developed evidence and requested that the original charges be amended.
On December 23rd, Ott was arraigned in 1st District Court on the following felony charges. Bond was set at $500,000 dollars.
- Count 1 – Open Murder
- Count 2 – Assault with Intent to do Great Bodily Harm less than Murder
- Count 3 – Attempted 1st Degree Home Invasion
