Monroe, MI – A pedestrian from Lenawee County was injured during a hit-and-run crash that occurred while Monroe County Sheriff’s Deputies were responding to a fatal crash in Bedford Township.

The incidents occurred on Smith Road, west of Summerfield Road Thursday night, at about 8:14pm.

Preliminary investigation by the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office revealed that a 23-year-old Ottawa Lake woman was operating a 2008 Pontiac G6 westbound on Smith Road when it crossed the centerline and collided head on with an eastbound 2014 Jeep Wrangler, operated by a 21-year-old Monroe.

Witnesses reported the Pontiac was traveling at excessive speeds and passing vehicles in a no passing zone at the time of the crash.

Witnesses who observed the crash stopped to assist. During this time a 73-year-old Riga woman was struck by an unknown black pickup truck or SUV style vehicle. The black vehicle did not stop after striking the woman. The vehicle continued to travel westbound on Smith Road.

The operator of the Pontiac, who was not wearing a seatbelt was pronounced deceased at the scene. The operator of the Jeep was wearing a seatbelt and was transported to an area hospital for treatment. The female pedestrian was transported to an area hospital for treatment.

Excessive speed and intoxicating substances appear to be factors in the crash. The identities of all persons involved are being withheld at this time.
