Adrian, MI – At a special meeting last week, the Adrian City Commission unanimously passed  a resolution that provided authority to the City Administrator, or his/her designee, to make decisions that are designed to support COVID recovery by our business community.

Among the actions that the Commission approved are authorization for downtown businesses to set up sidewalk cafes by right as long as the related placement rules are followed (allowing for four feet of clear sidewalk), the ability to apply for additional outdoor seating areas in other public areas adjacent to a business, such as an alley or parking lot, and the ability to apply for temporary outdoor seating on private property, in parking lot or lawn areas.

These measures are intended to compliment efforts by the Michigan Liquor Control Commission to facilitate outdoor dining. Application fees for these uses were waived by the Commission. The staff also committed to fast-tracking of these requests, and in general a 24-hour turn-around for requests made by businesses in support of their recovery. Businesses are reminded that social distancing measures, as prescribed by the Governor, must still be followed.

The Mayor and City Commissioners all made it clear they want to ensure the business community is fully supported, and City Administrator Nathan Burd emphasized the City’s efforts to be easy to work with, and to be flexible and responsive.
