Morenci Schools to Remain Closed Friday After Discovery of Bed Bugs

In a letter sent to parents earlier this week, Morenci Area Schools Superintendent Michael McAran said that there were “…a few Bed Bugs found in the high school…” Tuesday morning.

McAran said that the district “…has been and will continue to be proactive in stopping the spread of ‘Bed Bugs’…”

According to the statement to parents, “…the identified areas and classrooms throughout the district will be systematically sprayed this (Tuesday) evening with a rubbing alcohol spray for the treatment of Bed Bugs…”

The district is contracting with K-9 Bed Bug Hunters to make sure our schools are healthy for students and staff. The identified areas will either receive a heat treatment (a device that heats up objects to over 120 degrees to kill any living bugs or eggs), or will be treated with a rubbing alcohol spray to kill the bed bugs and prevent further infestation.

Items where Bed Bugs live are generally fabric types of items. This includes the padding on chairs, creases in books, or carpeted areas. Superintendent McAran said that this is a great time to make sure that backpacks, winter jackets, hats, gloves, and boots are washed and dried in high heat.

Morenci Schools were closed Thursday, and will remain so on Friday, January 31st.
