WASHINGTON — Congressman Tim Walberg is praising House passage of the Muhammad Ali American Boxing Revival Act, calling it a step toward strengthening protections and expanding opportunities in professional boxing.
Walberg says the bipartisan legislation is designed to protect fighters, ensure fairness, and promote new opportunities for American boxers, while addressing long-standing concerns about weak oversight in the sport.
In a press release, Walberg said, quote, “The Muhammad Ali American Boxing Revival Act is a strong, bipartisan bill that protects fighters, ensures fairness, and promotes new opportunities for American boxers,” unquote.
The legislation would establish new boxing organizations aimed at creating additional pathways for fighters to compete, while also setting minimum per-round pay standards and requiring medical insurance coverage for all professional boxers.
It also includes expanded safety measures, requiring medical personnel to be present at every fight and implementing industry-wide medical testing standards.
Walberg credited the bill’s sponsor for leading the effort, saying the goal is to both protect the legacy of the sport and help revitalize its future.
