ADRIAN — At a March 23rd Adrian City Commission special meeting, officials discussed a key cost-saving decision involving the fire department.

City leaders are recommending delaying a major refurbishment of the department’s ladder truck, a project estimated at around $300,000. Instead, the department will pursue smaller upgrades in the short term to ease pressure on the budget.

The decision comes as the cost of replacing the aging truck outright would be significantly higher, estimated at roughly 2 million dollars.

Fire officials say the current truck is about 26 years old, but with proper maintenance and future refurbishment, it could remain in service for another decade or more.

The discussion also highlighted broader concerns about aging equipment and the need to balance safety, reliability, and long-term costs as the city works through its budget priorities.
