LANSING — With the April 15th tax deadline about a month away, the Michigan Department of Treasury is warning residents to watch out for scams targeting taxpayers.

Officials say cybercriminal activity typically increases this time of year, with scammers using phone calls, emails, and fake messages to try to steal personal information or demand payments.

Treasury officials warn taxpayers that legitimate sources will not call or email demanding immediate payment, request gift cards or wire transfers, threaten arrest, or ask for credit card information over the phone. Confirm legitimacy before sharing information.

Anyone who receives a suspicious call and does not owe taxes is advised to hang up immediately. Those who believe they may owe taxes can contact Treasury directly to verify their account.

Treasury also reminds taxpayers that refunds typically take four to six weeks for e-filed returns and up to eight weeks for mailed returns.

So far this season, the state has processed 2.6 million returns and issued more than $1.5 billion in refunds.
