LANSING — A new coalition focused on data center development is launching in Michigan.

The group, called Michigan for Responsible Data Centers, says it will provide communities with information on energy use, water resources, environmental impact, and economic development as more projects are proposed across the state.

The coalition includes utilities, business organizations, labor groups, and researchers.

The launch comes as interest in data center development continues to grow, raising questions in communities about energy demand, water usage, and long-term environmental impacts.

The group points to a recent guidebook from the University of Michigan’s Graham Sustainability Institute, which outlines best practices for local governments reviewing data center proposals.

It also cites an economic analysis from Anderson Economic Group, estimating projects could generate significant economic output and construction-related jobs depending on size and lifespan.

Coalition leaders say responsible development will require clear planning, enforceable environmental standards, and local oversight.
