LANSING — The Michigan Department of Treasury is reminding residents that the deadline to file their state individual income tax returns is now about one month away.
State officials say individual income tax returns must be filed electronically or postmarked by 11:59 p.m. on Wednesday, April 15th. Both federal and Michigan state returns are due on the same date.
To ensure accuracy and avoid delays, officials advise electronic filing or using a reputable tax preparer. The Michigan Treasury e-Services platform allows taxpayers to file state returns for free, make payments, check refund status, and communicate with Treasury.
Those expecting refunds should allow 4 to 6 weeks for e-filed returns or 6 to 8 weeks for mailed returns before checking their refund status online.
Free tax preparation assistance is also available for qualifying residents through IRS-certified volunteers, including people with low to moderate income, disabilities, or those age 60 and older.
Treasury is also warning residents to watch out for tax-related scams, noting the department will never request payment through gift cards.
