LANSING — A state senator from Branch County is moving to roll back Michigan’s newly implemented 24% wholesale marijuana tax.

Senator Jonathan Lindsey of Coldwater has introduced Senate Bill 810, legislation that would repeal the tax approved during late-year budget negotiations and return marijuana taxation to the structure originally approved by voters.

Lindsey says he opposed the tax increase from the start, calling it unnecessary growth in state government and warning it could harm businesses and lead to job losses. He also questioned whether the higher tax would generate the projected revenue if sales decline or if the policy faces legal challenges.

Lindsey says the bill has bipartisan support, with four Republican and three Democratic co-sponsors, and he expects additional backing as debate continues.

Senate Bill 810 has been referred to the Senate Committee on Government Operations.
