LANSING — Governor Gretchen Whitmer is calling for expanded housing affordability as part of her 2026 State of the State address, urging lawmakers to increase housing supply and lower costs for Michigan families.
Whitmer signaled support for a proposed affordable housing tax credit and House legislation that would modernize rezoning laws, allow smaller homes, permit duplexes and modest multi-family housing in more neighborhoods, and reduce parking mandates that can raise rents.
The Michigan Environmental Council says the focus on housing affordability is timely as families face rising mortgage payments, rental costs and energy bills.
Chief Policy Officer Charlotte Jameson said increasing housing supply and expanding energy efficiency tools could help reduce overall household expenses.
The group also emphasized weatherization funding in the next state budget to address aging and inefficient housing stock.
Supporters say the legislation would strengthen local economies and create more walkable communities if approved by the Legislature.
