MONROE CO. — The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office is seeking additional volunteers for its Victim Services Unit as demand for services continues to grow.

The Victim Services Unit provides short-term crisis intervention for individuals and families experiencing trauma, including the loss of a loved one or being the victim of a crime. The teams also help connect people in crisis with community resources.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, volunteers are trained through the Michigan Sheriffs’ Association and work under the direction of the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office. The required training is a 20-hour program that covers topics including the stages of grief, communication techniques, law enforcement protocols and victims’ rights within the criminal justice system.

Victim Services Advocates are community volunteers who provide support during difficult situations.
