ADRIAN — The Nurses Honor Guard is raising awareness in Lenawee and Monroe counties about a program that provides a formal tribute at the funeral of a nurse.

The volunteer group attends services dressed in traditional white uniforms, complete with capes, caps and a ceremonial lantern symbolizing nursing’s historic roots. Team leader Pam Bolinger explained the purpose of the tribute.

The local chapter began after Dorothy Sheh-Shelly sought to honor her own mother, who was a lifelong nurse.

She said the tribute revealed just how many lives her mother had quietly impacted.

Organizers say the service often leaves a lasting impression on families and even those unfamiliar with the tradition.

Katie Meyer said the emotional weight of the ceremony can be difficult to put into words.

The Nurses Honor Guard serves both Lenawee and Monroe counties. The group is volunteer-based and encourages nurses of all ages to participate.
