LANSING — The Michigan House has approved a package of election integrity bills aimed at limiting foreign influence in state elections.

House Bills 5197 and 5198 passed Thursday and now move to the Michigan Senate.

The legislation would prohibit foreign funding of ballot proposals and require additional disclosures tied to election administration funding.

House Bill 5197 closes a gap in existing law by extending restrictions on foreign contributions to ballot initiatives and referenda.

House Bill 5198 updates election law to require individuals, companies, or organizations that provide funding, goods, or services for election administration to file sworn certifications with the Secretary of State regarding foreign funding sources.

Supporters say the measures are intended to ensure that Michigan elections are funded and decided solely by Michigan voters.

The bills now await further consideration in the state Senate.
