LENAWEE CO. — Hunters Helping Lenawee has more than doubled its previous donation record, providing over 12,650 pounds of venison to fight hunger across Lenawee County.

The program, operated through the Lenawee Community Foundation, reported that as of January 30, the donated venison equates to more than 50,000 meals for local food pantries and community meal programs.

Organizers say the total is nearly two and a half times last year’s donation amount and brings the program’s lifetime impact to more than 130,000 meals since it began in 2010.

Nearly 15 percent of Lenawee County residents experience food insecurity, and each pound of venison can help feed at least four people.

Officials credit participating deer processors and expanded local processing capacity for the record-setting year.

Donations help cover processing costs so the meat can be distributed safely to families in need.
