LANSING — The Michigan High School Athletic Association has approved an expansion of personal branding, or name, image, and likeness opportunities for student-athletes, effective immediately.
The MHSAA Representative Council voted to allow individual student-athletes to earn compensation through activities such as social media promotions, personal appearances, autograph signings, and merchandise sales.
The association said the changes are limited to individual opportunities and are intended to prevent group-based collectives or pay-for-play arrangements that could affect competitive balance.
Branding activities cannot be tied to athletic performance or team success and may not use school names, logos, uniforms, or facilities. Schools and coaches are also prohibited from arranging or promoting these opportunities.
All personal branding activities must be disclosed to and approved by the MHSAA at least seven business days in advance.
