WASHINGTON — A tuna recall is expanding after Tri-Union Seafoods confirmed that previously recalled products were mistakenly shipped to stores.
The company says a third-party distributor inadvertently released quarantined canned tuna tied to a February 2025 voluntary recall. The original recall involved a manufacturing defect in easy-open pull-tab lids that could compromise the seal over time and create a risk of contamination with Clostridium botulinum, a potentially fatal foodborne illness.
The newly identified products were distributed to limited retailers, including Meijer stores in Michigan, as well as locations in Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio, and Wisconsin.
Impacted products include select Genova yellowfin tuna cans and multipacks with specific can codes and “Best if Used By” dates printed on the bottom of the can.
Consumers are warned not to use the product, even if it looks or smells normal. Anyone feeling ill should seek immediate medical attention.
If you have a recalled tuna can, you’re advised to return it to the place of purchase for a full refund, throw it away, or contact Tri-Union Seafoods directly for a retrieval kit and a coupon for a replacement product.
Consumers can contact the company at support@thaiunionhelp.zendesk.com or 833-374-0171. The toll-free number is available Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Eastern time.
