Janet L. Taylor, age 91, of Adrian passed away Saturday, December 27, 2025, at Charlotte Stephenson Manor, with family at her side.
Born October 28, 1934, in Buffalo, New York, she was the daughter of the late Raymond and Agnes (Zeller) Hylkema. After graduating from high school, Janet earned a bachelor’s degree in nursing from D’Youville University.
On December 29, 1956, she married Dr. Richard Taylor in Tonawanda, New York. This marked the beginning of an adventure that lasted just two days shy of 69 years, and included raising seven children, 30 plus years of snow birding in Punta Gorda, Florida where they built a home, and many sailing trips on their boat.
For 37 years, Janet owned and operated The Doll Cottage, a toy store in Tecumseh. Along with the retail business, she also restored antique dolls and taught classes to those wanting to make their own porcelain dolls. With a heart to help children, Janet was one of the founders of the Adrian Community Nursery and a member of KKE Sorority. She dedicated her life to helping others, including furnishing a children’s playroom at the women and Children’s Shelter (formerly) Herrick Hospital, actively supporting the St. Vincent DePaul Society and investing in a number of different organizations. She was an active member of St. Joseph Catholic Church.
In addition to her husband, Richard, she is survived by their children, Richard “Scott” (Martha) Taylor, Peter Taylor, Anne (Clint) Stackhouse, Amy (John) Meszaros, Beth (Mike) Johnston, Andrew Taylor, and Matthew (Brianne) Taylor, nine grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her sister, Marianne Timmerman and brother, Arnold Hylkema.
Funeral services will take place at 11:00 AM on Saturday, January 3, 2026, at Wagley Funeral Home with Fr. Michael Newman, OSFS officiating. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home prior to the service beginning at 10:00 AM.
