ONSTED — The Onsted Community Schools Board of Education has approved staff reductions as the district works to address ongoing financial concerns tied to declining enrollment and rising costs.

The board voted December 15 to eliminate seven positions, including two teaching roles, four educational support positions and one special education graduation coach. District officials say the move is part of an effort to correct a long-term budget imbalance and prevent the district’s fund balance from falling below the state’s minimum threshold.

Jonathan Royce said in a statement expenses continue to outpace revenue and delaying action could trigger increased state oversight of district finances. Board President Jason Terakedis told the Tecumseh Herald the decision was difficult but necessary to meet the district’s financial obligations.

The reductions were approved on separate 6–1 votes, with Treasurer Alex Gast voting no, citing a desire for additional analysis before acting.

District leaders say the goal is to balance the budget by the 2026–27 school year while minimizing impacts on students.
