LANSING — Governor Gretchen Whitmer spent part of the holiday season reaching out to Michigan National Guard members serving overseas and along the U.S. border.
The governor placed calls to actively deployed troops this week to thank them for their service and to wish them a safe holiday season and New Year.
Officials say more than 800 Michigan Guard members are currently deployed away from home. Their missions include assignments in Germany supporting U.S. European Command, operations in Kuwait under U.S. Central Command, and federal support work along the Southwest Border.
Lieutenant Governor Garlin Gilchrist joined in recognizing the sacrifices made by service members who remain on duty during the holidays.
Michigan Adjutant General Paul D. Rogers said Guard members continue to provide critical support in logistics, security, communications, and engineering roles.
State officials say they look forward to welcoming every deployed unit home safely to their families.
