ADRIAN — Adrian police are warning residents about a scam involving callers pretending to represent the Adrian Fire Department.
City officials say an Adrian resident recently received a call from a man claiming to be “Ramirez” with the fire department. The caller said there was an unpaid invoice for an “unauthorized fire” and asked for credit card information. The scammer referenced real City Hall phone numbers to sound legitimate.
The resident did not provide any information and instead went directly to the Adrian Fire Department, where officials confirmed the call was a scam.
The Adrian Fire Department says it will never call residents to demand credit card information or payment over the phone.
Police remind residents not to trust caller ID, to be cautious of payment demands involving gift cards, wire transfers, or cryptocurrency, and to verify requests independently using official contact information.
Anyone who received a similar call or has information is asked to contact Detective Sergeant Kevin Putnam at 517-264-4819 or email kputnam@adrianm.gov or APDTips@adrianmi.gov.
