WASHINGTON — Congressman Tim Walberg is launching a congressional inquiry into sports betting practices following multiple gambling scandals involving professional athletes.

Walberg, who chairs the U.S. House Committee on Education and the Workforce, has sent formal inquiries to several professional players’ associations, including those representing the NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL, and Major League Soccer.

The inquiry follows recent federal cases involving athletes accused of sharing confidential league information with gamblers to influence betting outcomes. Committee staff say the incidents raise concerns about the integrity of professional sports and the protections in place to prevent illegal wagering activity.

Walberg is asking players’ associations to outline how they educate athletes about illegal betting and what steps are being taken to prevent the misuse of proprietary information.

The committee has requested written responses by January 31, 2026.

Committee officials say the review is intended to safeguard fair competition and maintain trust in professional sports.
