MORENCI — The City of Morenci has been awarded more than $1.18 million in state housing grant funding to support major home improvement projects for local residents.

The funding comes through the Michigan State Housing Development Authority as part of the MI Neighborhood Program and will launch the Morenci Home Improvement Partnership, the largest home rehabilitation effort created specifically for Morenci homeowners.

City officials say the program is expected to help about 40 middle- to low-income households address critical home repairs tied to safety, energy efficiency, and aging structures.

Eligible improvements may include roof and structural repairs, heating and cooling upgrades, new siding and insulation, and replacement of windows and doors.

Community and Economic Development Director Heather Sarnac says the initiative is designed to help residents maintain the homes they depend on, while strengthening long-term neighborhood stability.

City Administrator Jeff Bell says strong housing plays a key role in sustaining healthy communities.

The city plans to hire a third-party administrator to manage the program. Applications for homeowner assistance are expected to open in early 2026.
