JACKSON — Congressman Tim Walberg has introduced federal legislation to rename the Jackson VA Community-Based Outpatient Clinic in honor of Herb Elfring, a Jackson native and one of the nation’s last known Pearl Harbor survivors.
Elfring died last year at age 102.
Walberg said the bill recognizes Elfring’s military service and his lifelong commitment to supporting veterans and mentoring young people.
Darlene Soave, who partnered with Elfring to create One Stop Veteran Resources, said he dedicated his life to helping veterans live with dignity and purpose while encouraging young people to learn the values of courage and service.
Elfring served in the U.S. Army National Guard from 1940 to 1945 and survived the attack on Pearl Harbor before later earning the rank of captain. After his military service, he continued volunteering in Jackson through youth programs, food drives, and veterans’ support efforts.
The legislation was introduced ahead of the 84th anniversary of Pearl Harbor.
