Ernestine Jean Smith, age 71, of rural Morenci, passed away peacefully at her residence, on Friday, November 21, 2025, surrounded by her family. She was born in Grand Rapids on November 9, 1954, to the late Joseph and Donna (Taylor) Ledesma. On June 27, 1987, she married Ward F. “Fred” Smith in Morenci, and he survives. Ernestine worked in the manufacturing field, retiring from Hi-Lex in Hudson. Her family was the focus of her life. She enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Ernestine loved spending time in and around her pool; and in her free time, enjoyed traveling to the Smoky Mountains in Tennessee and watching the Hallmark Channel and Lifetime.
Left to cherish her memory is her husband of 38 years, Fred; children, Donnie (Kendra) Alcock, Mandy (Mike) White; Tonya (Brian) Houghton, and Sonya (Chris) Shepherd; grandchildren, Desmond, Hunter, Hannah, Breckin, Shamus, Ava, Brooklin, Cailin, Morgin, Ryan, Trinity, Emma, Brayden, Tiffany, Olivia, and Chris; great-grandchildren, Paisley, Jett, August, and one on the way; brothers, Eugene (Carol) and Steve Ledesma; and a sister, Connie (David) Ford. Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Tina Weaver.
According to Ernestine’s wishes, private graveside services will take place in Oak Grove Cemetery in Morenci.
